Plastic deformationof metals is generally carried by the motion of dislocation. Storage of theseline defects increases the strength of the metal and their work-hardening isdirectly related to an increase in the dislocation density. The general frame workfor modeling the stress strain curves in terms of the underlying dislocationdensity is outlined. Effects of varying temperatures and strain rates on theflow curve and tensile failure are discussed as well as the influence of grainboundaries or particles of second phases. Recent examples for describingwork-softening during plastic deformation within the same framework arepresented. The occurrence of different work-hardening stages is related to themicrostructural evolution and the consequences of heterogeneous dislocationdistributions considered.
